Newton Shepherd, who has been ill for some weeks, died at his   home in W. Main St. shortly after noon on Tuesday. Funeral services   at Union on Thursday afternoon were conducted by Rev. Cornelius   Airhart. Interment in Union Cemetery. Mr. Shepherd was the son of   John & Desire Shepherd. He was born on a farm east of Browns   Valley, near the Indian Creek Cemetery, April 14, 1849. At the   age of 19 he married Mary Reynolds. Had he lived until today it   would have been their golden wedding anniversary. To them was   born one child, Mrs. Lennie Herod of Terre Haute. There are 3   grandchildren: Mrs. Lillian Runge and Charles and Wilfred Herod,   all living in Terre Haute. When he was six months old they took   into their home their foster son, Cecil, to whom they were true   parents in every regard. When a young man, Mr. Shepherd joined   the Freedom Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Rev. Mr.   Dooley, afterwards transferring his membership to Union Church   and from there to the Waveland Church. With the exception of 3   years in Terre Haute, his life has been spent in this immediate   vicinity. He was a carpenter by trade, and a man of unquestioned   integrity. He is the last of his immediate family. Mrs. Shepherd   will continue to make her home here. - typed by kbz
